I'm reading about Wassilj Kandinskij, painter and theoretic of the Russian art; he was born on the 4th of december in 1866 and he's considerated the most important founder of the Abstractism.... I have discovered that he was such found of music as painting and when he was young he studied piano and violoncello; it was this first passion that made him write some years later in 1910 his first important book "The Spiritual in the Art" :
"The most important lesson comes from the music... the music has been from some centuries the only art not adopting his power to imitate the natural phenomenons, but to feel the interior life of the artist and to create the life of sounds"
Kandinskij thinks the painting has to be similar to music and colours have to connect with sounds. The music is the pure expression of our interior needing and it doesn't mimic the nature: it's abstract. So even the painting has to be astract, leaving the idea of imitating of a model. Only the abstract painting (not figurative), where pure forms are not recognizable and free by the dependence with physical objects, can give life to the spirituality.
Kandinskij, from the theory for the movement of cours is a vibration touching the innnerness, compares colours with musical instruments and he says:
Yellow: it has a powerful madness and a blind irrationality; it's compared to the sound of the trumpet and the fanfare. It can be connected to Red, but it has many differences.
Red: it's warm, vital and lively, restless but different from Yellow because it has not its superficility. The power of Red is conscious and it can be canalized. More it's clear and light, more is similar to yellow, with energy and life. Medium red is deep, while dark red is reflective. It can be approached to the sound of the tube.
Azure: it's distand and indifferent like an artistic sky; it can remind the sound of a flute.
Orange: it's energy, movement; more it's close to yellow, more becomes superficial; it's like a bell.
Green: it's total movement in a total stillness... it makes you boring, it suggests opulence and satisfaction, it's a satisfied quiet... if it goes to yelllow it takes energy and power, if to blue becomes reflective and active. It has the wide and dark tones of violin.
Violet: as Orange it's unstable and it's really hard to use it between Red and Blue. It can be compared to the english horn and pipe.
Blue: it's the deep colour of the sky; when it's intense and strong reminds quiet and stillness, but when fades to Black it's powerfully dramatic; when it becomes lighter his qualities are similar to Azure. The Cello can be compared to Blue.
Grey: it's similar to Green, but we feel the total stillness without energy.
Brown: we obtain it mixing Red and Black, but the energy of the first one is stopped by the second one, slow and thought.
White: it's the amount of all the colours, but at the same time they all disappear and it's like a silent wall, a non real sound. But it's even a birthing silence, rich of possibilities like a pause between two notes, waiting for the next one.
Black: it's the dark, the absence of light and sounds... it's a fire totally estinguished, it's the silence of the Death, it's the final pause of a musical execution, but, differing from White, it exalts every colour in it.
I'm so excited, it's marvellous!!!
This dress was inspired by the admiring this ashtonishing carousel of art, music and colours ...
